  3. As with any server daemon that is accessible to the outside world,
  4. it is advisable to run <span class="productname">PostgreSQL</span> under a
  5. separate user account. This user account should only own the data
  6. that is managed by the server, and should not be shared with other
  7. daemons. (For example, using the user <code class="literal">nobody</code> is a bad
  8. idea.) It is not advisable to install executables owned by this
  9. user because compromised systems could then modify their own
  10. binaries.
  11. </p><p>
  12. To add a Unix user account to your system, look for a command
  13. <code class="command">useradd</code> or <code class="command">adduser</code>. The user
  14. name <span class="systemitem">postgres</span> is often used, and is assumed
  15. throughout this book, but you can use another name if you like.
