  3. <span class="productname">PostgreSQL</span> includes an implementation of the
  4. standard <acronym class="acronym">btree</acronym> (multi-way balanced tree) index data

  6. order can be indexed by a btree index. The only limitation is that an
  7. index entry cannot exceed approximately one-third of a page (after TOAST

  10. Because each btree operator class imposes a sort order on its data type,
  11. btree operator classes (or, really, operator families) have come to be
  12. used as <span class="productname">PostgreSQL</span>'s general representation
  13. and understanding of sorting semantics. Therefore, they've acquired
  14. some features that go beyond what would be needed just to support btree
  15. indexes, and parts of the system that are quite distant from the
  16. btree AM make use of them.
